MEGACON Orlando
Most Summers I find myself wandering a convention floor with a camera and a badge. This year it was MEGACON Orlando, and I went in with one goal: shoot for my book, not the client.
I like these projects for the same reason I like civil war reenactments or a county fair — put a big group of people who share one specific obsession in one room, and the pictures make themselves. Cosplayers are also, without exception, thrilled to be photographed. Ask, and you've got five minutes and full cooperation, which is more than I can say for some corporate gigs.
I shot this one loose, with an on camera flash. A red lightsaber against a beige convention-center carpet always looks great.
It's the same appetite that shows up in the commercial and lifestyle work on this site — real people, doing something they actually care about, not posed for a camera they know is there. Personal work like this is where that muscle gets built.
